Fallas Culture and Customs

Fallas is a traditional celebration in Valencia, Spain, held annually in March. The main attraction of Fallas are the elaborate ninots, large papier-mâché figures that are displayed throughout the city. Each neighborhood builds their own ninot, often with a satirical or humorous theme. The festivities also include parades, fireworks, music, and traditional Valencian cuisine.

One of the most iconic customs of Fallas is the daily mascletà, a loud and rhythmic firework display that takes place at 2pm in the town hall square. Another highlight is the nightly fireworks display, called the castillo, which illuminates the sky with colorful lights and shapes. On the final night of Fallas, the ninots are set on fire in a spectacular display known as the cremà.

Throughout Fallas, locals and visitors alike participate in traditional events such as bullfights, paella contests, and street parties. The festival is a time for Valencians to come together to celebrate their heritage and community spirit. Fallas is not just a festival, but a way of life for the people of Valencia, who take great pride in preserving their cultural traditions.
