Falles: A Celebration of Colours
Falles: A Celebration of Colours
Falles is a traditional celebration that takes place in Valencia, Spain, every year from March 15th to March 19th. It is a festival full of colour, music, fireworks, and elaborate sculptures made of wood and paper mache known as «fallas». The streets of Valencia are transformed into a magical world of art and creativity during this time, attracting thousands of visitors from all over the world.
The Origins of Falles
The origins of Falles can be traced back to the 18th century when carpenters would burn their wooden candle holders on the eve of the Feast of Saint Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters. Over time, this tradition evolved into the elaborate sculptures that we see today. The fallas are usually satirical in nature, poking fun at politicians, celebrities, and current events.
The Fallas Competition
One of the highlights of Falles is the fallas competition, where different neighbourhoods of Valencia compete to create the most impressive sculptures. These sculptures can reach heights of up to 20 meters and are often adorned with intricate details and colourful decorations. The competition culminates on the night of March 19th when the fallas are set on fire in a spectacular display of fireworks and flames.
Other Activities during Falles
Aside from the fallas competition, Falles also features parades, concerts, bullfights, and traditional dances. Visitors can sample traditional Valencian dishes such as paella and horchata while exploring the vibrant streets filled with music and dancing. The atmosphere during Falles is electric, with people of all ages coming together to celebrate this unique and colourful festival.
