Falles: A Celebration of Community

Falles is a traditional celebration in Valencia, Spain, that is deeply rooted in the community and brings people together in a unique and festive way. This annual event, which takes place in March, is a time for neighborhoods to come together to create elaborate sculptures made of cardboard, wood, and paper mache, known as «fallas.»

Each neighborhood in Valencia has its own committee that is responsible for organizing the construction of the falla, as well as planning other activities and events throughout the week-long celebration. The fallas range in size and complexity, with some towering over 30 feet tall and featuring intricate designs and political or satirical themes.

Building the Fallas

The construction of the fallas begins months in advance, with artists and craftsmen working tirelessly to create these impressive structures. The fallas are often a reflection of current events or issues in society, and they serve as a form of artistic expression for the community. Each neighborhood takes great pride in their falla, and there is a sense of friendly competition among the different committees to create the most impressive and creative sculpture.

Parades and Festivities

Throughout the week of Falles, there are parades, concerts, fireworks, and other events that bring the community together in celebration. The streets are filled with people wearing traditional costumes, dancing to live music, and enjoying the festive atmosphere. One of the highlights of Falles is the daily mascletà, a loud and rhythmic firework display that takes place in the town square and can be heard throughout the city.

The Burning of the Fallas

On the final night of Falles, the fallas are set on fire in a spectacular display known as the «cremà.» This symbolic act represents the end of the celebration and the beginning of a new year. As the fallas burn, there is a sense of closure and renewal, as the community comes together to say goodbye to the sculptures and look forward to the next year’s celebration.
