Falles, also known as Fallas, is a traditional celebration in Valencia, Spain, that takes place every year from March 15th to March 19th. This festival is a unique cultural experience that attracts visitors from all over the world. The origins of Fallas can be traced back to the 18th century, when carpenters would burn wooden planks and old pieces of furniture on the eve of the feast day of Saint Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters. Over the years, this tradition evolved into the elaborate and colorful festival that we know today.

The Fallas Monuments

One of the main attractions of Fallas are the fallas monuments, which are large sculptures made of wood, cardboard, and paper-mache. These monuments can reach heights of up to 20 meters and are incredibly detailed and intricate. Each falla is a satirical representation of a current event, political figure, or cultural phenomenon. The fallas are displayed throughout the city during the festival, and on the last night, they are set on fire in a spectacular display of fireworks and flames.

Traditional Events and Activities

During Fallas, the streets of Valencia come alive with parades, music, dancing, and traditional costumes. There are daily mascletas, which are loud and rhythmic firework displays that take place in the main square. The streets are also filled with food stalls selling traditional Valencian dishes, such as paella and churros. Another highlight of Fallas is the Ofrenda de Flores, where thousands of people parade through the streets dressed in traditional costumes and offer flowers to the Virgin Mary.

The fallas monuments are created by local neighborhood associations, known as casal fallers, who work together throughout the year to design and build their falla.
