Falles: A Festive Tradition in Valencia

Falles is a traditional celebration in Valencia, Spain, that takes place every year from March 15th to March 19th. The origin of Fallas dates back to the Middle Ages, when carpenters would burn their old wooden tools and scraps to celebrate the arrival of spring. Over time, this tradition evolved into what is now known as Fallas, a festival that celebrates the art of creating giant sculptures made of cardboard, wood, and other materials.

The Fallas Monuments

One of the main highlights of Fallas is the creation of the Fallas monuments, which are elaborate sculptures that can reach heights of up to 20 meters. These monuments are often satirical in nature, depicting current events, political figures, or popular culture icons. Each neighborhood in Valencia competes to create the most impressive Fallas monument, with the winning monument being awarded a prize at the end of the festival.

The climax of Fallas comes on the night of March 19th, known as La Nit del Foc (The Night of Fire). This is when the Fallas monuments are set ablaze in a spectacular display of fireworks and flames. The burning of the Fallas symbolizes the end of the festival and the renewal of life, as the ashes of the monuments are scattered to the winds.
