Falles: A Gathering of Communities

Falles is a traditional celebration that takes place in Valencia, Spain, every year from March 15th to 19th. The festival is a vibrant and colorful event that brings together communities from all over the city to participate in various activities and traditions.

History of Falles

The origins of Falles can be traced back to the Middle Ages when carpenters would burn wooden planks, known as parots, to celebrate the arrival of spring. Over time, the celebration evolved into what is now known as Falles, with the creation of intricate and elaborate sculptures made of cardboard and wood, called ninots.

Traditional Activities

During Falles, communities come together to build their ninots, which can range in size from small to several stories high. These sculptures are often satirical in nature, depicting political figures or current events in a humorous way. On the final night of the festival, the ninots are set ablaze in a spectacular display of fireworks and flames.

Community Involvement

One of the most important aspects of Falles is the sense of community it fosters. Each neighborhood in Valencia has its own falla, or group of people who work together to create their ninot and organize events throughout the festival.
