Falles: A Time for Festivities

Falles is a traditional celebration that takes place in the city of Valencia, Spain, every year in March. The festival is a combination of fireworks, music, parades, and a unique tradition of creating and burning enormous cardboard and wooden sculptures called «ninots». The festival attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world who come to witness the spectacle and immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere of Falles.

The Origins of Falles

The origins of Falles can be traced back to the Middle Ages when carpenters would burn pieces of wood that they used to hang their candles on during the winter months. Over time, this tradition evolved into the creation of elaborate sculptures made of wood and cardboard, which were then set on fire as a way to celebrate the arrival of spring. Today, the festival has grown into a week-long event filled with parades, music, and fireworks.

The Fallas Monuments

One of the main highlights of Falles is the construction of the Fallas monuments, which are elaborate sculptures that can reach heights of up to 20 meters. These sculptures are created by local artists and craftsmen and often depict satirical scenes or characters that poke fun at politicians, celebrities, or current events. The monuments are displayed throughout the city for several days before being set on fire in a spectacular display of flames and fireworks on the night of March 19th, known as the «Nit de la Crema».

Traditions and Celebrations

In addition to the burning of the Fallas monuments, Falles also features a variety of other traditions and celebrations. One of the most popular events is the daily «mascletà», a loud and rhythmic firecracker display that takes place in the city’s main square, Plaza del Ayuntamiento. There are also parades, street parties, and traditional dances that add to the festive atmosphere of the festival. Visitors can also sample local cuisine, such as paella and churros, and enjoy live music performances throughout the week.
